Many young people, or people who remember being young, will know the pull of the marine as an inspiration for learning or becoming involved in the sciences. At least in Australia, where our population is clustered around the coast, one of the favourite futures used to be that of a marine biologist. Perhaps in the current climate, where science is not seen as a possible breadwinner, that may no longer be the case. But we can attest after 10 years of sea projects, being out at sea and having the opportunity to learn brings out even the most disinterested student. Recent studies only underline the point that having your curiosity awakened is the best way to learn and what better way to learn about the ocean than floating out at sea!
